A Vision of Student Today a short video summarizing some of the most important characteristics of students today - how they learn, what they need to learn, their goals, hopes, dreams, what their lives will be like, and what kinds of changes they will experience in their lifetime. Created by Michael Wesch in collaboration with 200 students at Kansas State University.

Building yourself, building your identity
The effect of new media When media change then relationship change
- We need to create _ in our classroom: (Knowledge-ability) o Communication o Thoughtfulness o Creativity o Empathy § They are ALL CONNECTED
- By doing the above, you make the change from Meaning-Seekers to Meaning-MAKERS within your students
- When media changes, relationships change
- The search for identity is happening in a world saturated with media
- Students NEED ‘critical thinking’ – even if to just take on the onslaught of media - Web 2.0 isn’t just linking information, it’s linking PEOPLE

How do we get away from a strict/forced classroom?
1- Engage REAL PROBLEMS (don’t start w/ the technology) – has to go beyond the classroom…that the teacher doesn’t know the answer to
2- Engage the real problem WITH students – teacher becomes a student again
3- Harness the RELEVANT tools
Examples: 1-The Syllabus for the course is on a wiki and editable by anyone a.Goals/what we want to achieve b.Can go back and edit in the schedule i.Updates are emailed to students – WebPaint.com__
2- Reading assignments in Etherpad…”go read everything we need to know to solve this problem” – everyone reads a bit and updates in Etherpad b/c everyone reads a little and reads something different
3- Students blogs – can blog anywhere they want (as longs as it has an RSS) which is then put into a Yahoo Hype(pipes?)
4- Students do interview questions for a project on YouTube to get more responses
5- Each student creates a 5min video which will then all be compiled to be a real paper/real project that was previously collaboratively written/edited via a GoogleDoc
Goal in the classroom should be to teach GLOBAL EMPATHY.
In the classroom:
part 1- engage with real problems
part 2- with students
part 3- harness the relevant tools (*)
Use technology in meaningful ways, not just to use technology
